Common name: Manzanita
A true California icon! There's nothing quite like its smooth, deep mahogany-red bark — it looks almost polished, and it's beautiful year-round, even when nothing is blooming. In winter, small white or pale pink urn-shaped flowers appear, right when native bees most need a food source. Plant them in the right spot — sandy, dry, well-drained soil — and they will reward you with decades of very low maintenance and year-round sculptural presence.
