A step inland from the coast, these neighborhoods still receive heavy summer fog and cool temperatures but are slightly more sheltered from direct ocean wind. Soils tend to be heavier clay over sand. Gardens here are reliably cool and moist in summer, with mild, wet winters — ideal conditions for many shade-tolerant and moisture-loving California natives.
