Rough Hedgenettle
Stachys rigida
A tough, beautiful California native perennial with surprising charm! Commonly found in shady dry places growing in the understory of our oak woodlands, Rough Hedgenettle produces spikes of delicate pink to purple tubular flowers that bloom from late spring through summer, creating soft, romantic color in gardens. The fuzzy, wrinkled leaves are attractive year-round, providing wonderful texture and structure even when not in bloom. The aromatic foliage releases a pleasant herbal scent when brushed against.
This native perennial forms expanding clumps and spreads by rhizomes to create natural, informal displays perfect for wildlife gardens and naturalistic landscapes. Stachys rigida typically reaches 1-2 feet tall with an airy, graceful habit. The flowers are beloved by butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, making it essential for pollinator gardens.
Both butterflies and hummingbirds will use the flowers for nectar. Checkerspot larvae will use the foliage for food.
Incredibly drought tolerant once established. Add to cool flower beds that get some water, mix with Yerba Buena lilies, or herchera to add interest to your shade garden. Perfect for borders, rock gardens, meadow plantings, or anywhere you need reliable, beautiful groundcover. Low maintenance and deer resistant, this native needs minimal care once established. The soft flower color and fuzzy foliage create garden magic with authentic California native beauty!
