Common name: California Lilac
This is one of California's showiest natives, and it earns its place in the garden year-round: the deep green foliage is attractive even out of bloom, and the roots actively fix nitrogen, improving the soil for neighboring plants. Varieties range from a 1-foot groundcover to a 12-foot tree-like shrub. Fast-growing and deer-resistant.
